At least five people were killed as a result of a tornado in the US state of Alabama, CNN reports, citing Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade.
According to the US National Weather Service, seven tornadoes have been recorded in the state. The tornado caused damage to 30 to 50 houses and buildings in the town of Pelham. As a result of the tornado, almost 55 thousand people were left without electricity in the southeast, including more than 36 thousand in Alabama.
Meteorologists have declared an emergency in areas south and east of the city of Birmingham, as well as in Shelby and Jefferson counties.
The threat of tornadoes remains for most of the north of the state, including the cities of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.
At the end of August last year, Hurricane Laura hit the states of Texas and Louisiana. Then more than 15 people became victims of the elements. Louisiana Governor John Bell Edwards called the hurricane the strongest that has ever affected the state.
